Om
Chanting
Om is regarded as the holiest mantra in India. Most mantras have om at the beginning. Dharana is the belief that the whole universe has emerged from om and in the end merged into om. Meditation on om connects one with the root of creation, the source of its complexity. The sound (a-au-m) stems from the naval is the symbol of sacrifice and detachment.
For some thousands of years now there has been the tradition of the chanting of the name of God in temples in India. The chanting is a way of training the mind to go into samadhi, to merge with the God. In the language 'apan and udan' vayu mingle, prana enters sushumna, sahastradhara and samadhi is attained.
Chanting purifies the body and mind. Bondage, mental and physical is thrown off. An impression of the chanting is recorded in the heart. One's devotional energy becomes strong, calm relaxation descends upon the heart. It increases self-sufficiency, patience, understanding and concentration, making one more receptive to blessings and abundance. Chanting is known to make people speech impressive as it make people more aware of what they have saying.
om is a powerful vedic mantra for detachment.
